Before you hire
Three checks that cost nothing and prevent most problems
- Verify the licence number yourself. Every state board publishes a free lookup. Confirm it is current and that the classification covers your job.
- Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor. Ask them to have it sent directly. It takes one email and it is the single most common thing that turns out to be untrue.
- Confirm who pulls the permit. If the answer is you, or if the answer is that no permit is needed on work that plainly requires one, that is your signal to keep looking.
