HVACR technicians work on the equipment that controls temperature, humidity and air quality — furnaces, heat pumps, air conditioners, chillers and commercial refrigeration. The trade rewards diagnostic ability more than almost any other: a strong technician is paid for knowing which of thirty possible causes is producing the symptom. EPA Section 608 certification is federally required before you can purchase or handle refrigerant.

What the application requires

Education
Postsecondary nondegree award or high school diploma
Training route
6–24 month trade program, or a 3–5 year apprenticeship

Mathematics
One year of high school algebra with a passing grade. This is the most common reason applications stall, and one semester at a community college clears it.
Aptitude test
Most programmes test algebra and reading comprehension, with some mechanical and spatial reasoning. Free practice material is widely available; preparing genuinely moves your ranking.
Physical
Attic and rooftop work in extreme temperatures, ladder carries with heavy equipment, and awkward positions inside air handlers. Summer is long hours; winter varies by climate.
Licensing outcome
EPA Section 608 is required nationwide to handle refrigerant. Many states add a separate HVAC contractor or mechanical license.
